Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias necessitate a unique approach based upon the natural history of the disease, symptom burden, and the dementia itself, especially dementia related agitation and aggression, and the
related pharmacologic treatment. This Webinar will increase participants’ understanding of the evidence surrounding the natural history of the disease including clinical complications that support hospice appropriateness of dementia, pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic management of dementia related behaviors, and the role of medications to treat dementia. After this Webinar, participants will be able to better apply evidence-based medicine to the care
of dementia patients near the end of life.
ObjectivesAt the completion of this program, participants will be able to:
• Identify clinical choice points that indicate a poorer prognosis and hospice appropriateness in persons with dementia
• Describe an approach to the assessment and management of dementia related behaviors
• Discuss the burdens and benefits of dementia medications to incorporate rational utilization of these treatments
